Minimalissimo /// Sometimes

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Milan based designer and architect Denis Guidone has created a minimalist wrist watch for Projects Watches, named Sometimes.

What you will notice about the contemporary Sometimes watch is not only the simple shape, colour and face, but the function of the hands, particularly the second hand. These elongated white hands are juxtaposed against the black dial. The second hand aligns with the minute and hour for only a moment, moving independently and appearing as if out of sync with time itself. Perhaps making this its most interesting feature.

Sometimes it’s better to stop thinking about the time, whatever ... (Read more...)

Minimalissimo /// Colour And Light

Friday, August 5th, 2011

This beautifully subtle lighting object, called Colour, is a collaborative effort of two of Norway’s most acclaimed design stars Daniel Rybakken and Andreas Engesvik, produced by French furniture firm Ligne Roset. The piece is comprised of a series of diffusers, placed in front of a light source. Free standing and fully adjustable, these screens create different light and colour effects.

Daniel Rybakken explains:

Using sheets of coloured glass placed freely in front of a light source, Colour invites the user to mix various hues. I was also intrigued here by the exploded concept of a lamp, formed ... (Read more...)

Minimalissimo /// Pen Type-A

Friday, July 29th, 2011

Brooklyn-based industrial designers Che-Wei Wang and Taylor Levy of CW&T have created a Kickstarter project for the production of their new minimal pen. Pen Type-A is a stainless steel replacement for the Hi-Tec-C’s cheap plastic casing.

The minimalist design has has a dime screw on one end to allow for easy ink cartridge replacement. Its shaft is a solid smooth surface with no branding, and just the right thickness and weight so it feels comfortable in your hand.

The pen slides slowly into its protective sleeve, which doubles as a ruler and includes a 0.3 Black Hi-Tec-C Cartridge. The pen ... (Read more...)

The MoMA has a collection of some of Jacob Jensen’s forward thinking product designs for Bang & Olufsen during the 60′s and 70′s. That red Beolit 400 is incredible.

Minimalissimo /// Character

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Character is a Finnish company that recycles old neon signs, created by designer Aleksi Hautamäki.

Their process consists in choosing the most stylish letters and turning them into individual and unique design objects, and their sustainability is further enhanced by replacing the neon tubes with LEDs. They add a transformer, install a power cord and off the letters go with a new life cycle. You can even buy one online.

Neon signs have this capacity to attract and focus one’s attention, stripping away their surroundings – a single neon letter enhances that effect even more so. In these ... (Read more...)

Minimalissimo /// Ceramic Fan Heater

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

It’s been getting a little bit colder in Sydney lately, so I decided it was time to get myself a new heater.

In my research, I discovered a few heaters designed by Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa for his brand Plus Minus Zero. Although I opted for the infrared electric heater, I particularly like the cermaic fan heater he designed, which comes in three colours: red, blue and an almost-black dark green (my favorite).

I’m not sure how functional these heaters are, but as objects or sculptures I think it would be hard to deny how beautiful, simple and modest ... (Read more...)

Minimalissimo /// Helvetica Coat Hanger

Friday, December 17th, 2010

Minimalism can be reduced to one word: Helvetica. Italian-born designer, Massimo Vignelli, is a passionate advocate for the Helvetica typeface rational style. He claims that one of the virtues of Helvetica is the spaces that frame the letters.

The austere Helvetica typeface might not be your favorite choice. Some of us, typeface aficionados, have different degrees of affection for it—our pared down sans serif of choice. Others barely notice it. Our lives would be pretty fuzzy without a neutral typeface that sterilizes any word or phrase it touches.

Alegre Industrial, an industrial design agency from Spain, feels Helvetica ... (Read more...)

Minimalissimo /// Obligatory Designer Clock

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

India-born designer Saikat Biswas really flexed his design muscle to create the Obligatory Designer Clock. It doesn’t have any hour and minute hands; instead, the hour markings dynamically change to show the time.

From 03:00 – 03:59, the 3rd marking slowly fills up by the minute. At 04:00, the 4th marking appears and fills up.

To see it in action, check out the time-lapse video on the left. Too bad it’s only a concept…

Minimalissimo /// Wrist Watch

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

Plus Minus Zero is the name of the brand chosen for the minimalist industrial designs of Naoto Fukasawa (1954).

It’s hard to deny the elegance and beauty of the innovative and understated Wrist Watch from Plus Minus Zero. The strap simply threads through the back of the face and so can be easily changed, it also makes the watch clean and a beautiful single entity.

Naoto Fukasawa says:

Many designers feel that objects should somehow be stimulating and eye-catching. However, I feel that it’s important that people don’t notice them unless they are needed. I am trying to create a ... (Read more...)

ISO50 Blog - The Blog of Scott Hansen (Tycho / ISO50) /// Rich Brilliant Willing

Friday, November 12th, 2010

Some excellent product design going on over at Rich, Brilliant, Willing. Indeed, I’m guessing you need to be all three of those things to own any of their products. I think that’s the last thing I’d spend money on, lighting. Even though it’s probably one of the more important factors in making a room look good and feel comfortable, it’s so hard to justify these $1,000 lamps and fixtures. Forever Ikea.
