I randomly came across the work of Calum Alexander Watt, an illustrator with some immense talent and super creative imagination. I fell in love with his work because of how futuristic it is, creating all sorts of interesting concepts. The images above are from some sort of Disney show or something, I’m honestly not sure (disclaimer: I work for Disney, that has nothing to do with this). I think the idea is like Pokemon except with giant, monster looking characters. I love the range and diversity he’s come up with, the lighthouse creature above at top is my absolute favorite. How cool would it be to have a giant lighthouse friend? Defintely check out the rest of his work as well, this guy is crazy talented.

The Muted but Mystical Illustrations of Dadu Shin

These illustrations by New York based illustrator Dadu Shin are beautiful. A quick skim through his portfolio and you’ll find that much of what Dadu draws stems from nature. He creates richly textured worlds which are painted with a palette of simple muted colors and he occasionally populates these places with weird and wonderful creatures.

For me, the middle image is particularly striking; featuring a half-bird half-horse creature that stroll majestically with a herd of racing horses. Yet amid this bizarre scene Dadu manages to exude a sense of calmness throughout. This is not a world of off-the-wall oddity but a place that you would be more then happy to live in. Indeed nearly all of the places which Dadu Shin creates feel like magical worlds that you’d like to visit. For now, the best you can do is visit his site and spend some proper time amid the stillness and the beauty of his work.

I apologize that it has taken me so long to post anything lately. I’ve been quite busy updating and refining my own portfolio work, however, more work will be posted soon.

That being said, I just stumbled upon these beautiful illustrations today from Peter P. Plasencia, which were in the 1964 biography, Jules Verne: The Man Who Invented the Future, by author Franz Born. This compelling imagery utilizes dynamic compositions with flattened perspectives to successfully tell a story or convey an environment through the simplified use of geometric shapes and greyscale color palettes.

I hope you find inspiration in these illustrations as much as I do. We would be nowhere without the amazing artists of the past.+

Justin Mezell, Winner of Re-Covered Books: 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?'

I’ve been really excited and proud by the outpouring of amazing entries for the Re-Covered Books contest featuring Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. I need to give a huge thanks to the mant talented artists, designers and creatives that decided to enter into the contest. That said, there can only be one winner, and that honor goes to Justin Mezell.

I was most impressed with Justin’s work because of the unique look and style of his entry. At the bottom there’s what looks like to me like one of the androids eyes, and wired up to that is a tiny core that contains a little sheep. Okay, I think it could have possibly been better without the inclusion sheep, but at least it was tastefully done. I also felt like the color combination of orange, blue, charcoal and creme were well picked and complimented each other nicely. The other big factor that really works for me was Justin’s consideration of the typography for the title. There were a lot of entries that didn’t really do a great job on the type, that was a deal breaker for me, but his use of Univers was a nice change from all the Futura. Not hating on Futura, but in a field of a whole lot of Futura, this stands out quite a bit. Justin did a great job of thinking his entry all the way through, and I think he’s totally deserving of being a winner.

Yet again, a big thanks to Justin and all the other creatives who entered. I’ll be sure to announce the next Re-Covered Books contest next week, so be sure to get ready. If you have any suggestions feel free to leave them in the comments section.

There’s something really amazing about the work of Junyi Wu, a Los Angeles based artist who’s drawings totally captured my attention. When I look at her work, and this is going to sound cheesy, it reminds me of a rose. It’s obviously beautiful and extremely well done, but it’s also got this dark, sort of deadly side that gives it some grit. I think that fusion of both beauty with darkness is really important, for me personally it makes me do a double take when I look at her pieces. Her work looks like it’s mostly colored pencil, though I know some of the pieces were done digtally.

If you find her work intriguing, I’d suggest browsing her online portfolio as well as her personal blog, which has some nice details about her work and passions.

'Carl Fisher's Roads' by Sam Bosma

Wow! Picking images from Sam Bosma‘s portfolio to share on the site is tough work. The Ohio-born, Baltimore-based illustrator really has an impressive collection of work online and anyone could easily loose a substantial portion of their day simply clicking through it. The images above come from a series of five that he created for the current issue of Muse magazine for a piece about the American Entrepreneur Carl G. Fisher.

Fisher was a tireless pioneer and promoter who had a keen interest in America’s growing need for personal transportation during the first half of the 20th century. I think my favorite of Sam’s illustrations shows Carl Fisher’s unique promotion of bikes by throwing one off the roof of a building and awarding a free bike to whoever returned the wreckage back to the shop. Sam’s style is so much fun and his combination of composition, rich color pallets and a beautiful painterly style all add together to make really wonderful work. He also keeps an excellent blog which gives a great insight into his work process.

Really refreshing illustration work from Kilian Eng. I’m really getting an Avant Garde Magazine / 70′s-80′s illustration vibe from all this. Love the use of texture, it all feels so authentic.

More of Eng’s work and inspiration can be found at His Tumblr. (thanks Francisco)

CATEGORY: The Fox Is Black Jim Mahfood Mural for IGN

Jim Mahfood for IGN

I met Jim Mahfood once, when I lived in Roseville. He was coming to a signing at the comic book shop I worked at. I had to pick him up from the airport and I was totally nervous, for whatever reason. I remember trying to impress him with my knowledge about comics but came off sounding totally dumb. Thankfully he was a really nice guy and didn’t make me feel like the wanna-be dork I was. Cut to nearly 10 years later and I’m walking through the third floor of Myspace and I see a gigantic Jim Mahfood mural on a wall in the IGN offices. I was shocked.

It turns out that he did a mural for IGN in their San Francisco office so they asked him to one here in Beverly Hills as well. It’s kinda of a sci-fi/comic book mashup of characters all hanging out in the cantina from Star Wars. The inner nerd in me was totally freaking out pouring each of these panels. If you’re into any of this stuff you should click the images above to get a better look and see the details he put in. You can also see a cleaner version of the images over on his site by clicking here.
