KN | Kitsune Noir /// Afterzine

Monday, October 11th, 2010

My good friend Hamish Robertson invited me to be a part of his first foray into self-publishing with his new paperback zine Afterzine. The zine is 112 pages and is centered around the interpretation of the theme “negative space”, which was also the first assignment he was given as a student at Leeds College of Art. It’s an absolutely beautiful piece of work with a ton of great contributors like Peter Saville, Joseph Sullivan, Alexa Chung, Tavi Gevinson and about 20 or so other contributors. You can see my piece below, a collage I put together that felt very ... (Read more...)

KN | Kitsune Noir /// IKEA’s ‘Homemade Is Best’ Cookbook, Shot by Carl Kleiner

Monday, September 27th, 2010

In the same vein as so many of my friends and acquaintances I have a love/hate relationship with Swedish homewares giant IKEA; however, I love everything about their new book of baking recipes, Hembakat är Bäst (Homemade Is Best). Styled by Evelina Bratell and photographed by Carl Kleiner, the cookbook’s photography eschews only presenting the finished dish in favour of also capturing the ingredients in artfully arranged still life imagery. It’s a little like deconstructed food photography where intricately displayed piles of sugar, egg yolks and vanilla pods are works of art. As far as I ... (Read more...)

ISO50 Blog - The Blog of Scott Hansen (Tycho / ISO50) /// More World of Logotypes

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Came across this nice set from World of Logotypes on Raoul’s Blog. You may recognize these from the great book Eric Carl scanned in way back when. I’ve never seen them presented this way though, nice to be able to focus on them in individually.

KN | Kitsune Noir /// Peter Mendelsund

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Most of the time I groan when I see that a designer or artist has a “portfolio coming soon” on their portfolio site. But then I saw Peter Mendelsund interim design and was excited to see more, almost like a JPG teaser trailer. Peter is a book jacket designer who’s body of work is epic to say the least. He’s designed jackets for all kinds of authors from Dostoevsky (which you can see above) to manga god Osamu Tezuka. Hopefully Mr. Mendelsund puts his true portfolio up soon so we can enjoy the full breadth of his work.

In the ... (Read more...)

Awesome collection of covers from Totodo.jp, a Japanese vintage bookstore. I want the CITIES one just to scan it and blow it up on my wall. I can hear Alex’s bank account emptying.

KN | Kitsune Noir /// ‘Mapping Istanbul’ by Project Projects

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

I’m really digging this book created by the folks over at Project Projects called Mapping Istanbul which attempts to map and define the complex city. Working alongside Garanti Galerie and architects Superpool they’ve put together a collection of maps, charts and graphs that show the various aspects of the city and how it works. I love the visual language the’ve created for the book, and there’s a ton of great images for those into info-porn. And at 224 pages this is an absolute epic in terms of information, I can’t imagine that they’ve missed much.
