Modern Maps

Karen O’Leary is a North Carolina, USA-based architect and artist that simplifies the classic map, rendering a clean design as a result of intricate hand-cuts or repetitive black hand-drawn lines.

With maps ranging from New York City to Paris and London, O’Leary erases every information judged unnecessary, be it by cutting out land and water into negative space, or by electing only the barest elements to draw. What remains is the dense and intricately woven web of a very real geography, turned delicate by a meticulous work of reductionism.

I love the possibilities of dramatically changing one’s perception of a map by electing what kind of information is shown… O’Leary’s minimalist editing of these complex graphics produces very simple yet strikingly beautiful results!

Domaines collectifs

Exposée en Amérique, en Europe et en Asie entre 1991 et 2003, « Field » est une série d’installations du sculpteur anglais Antony Gormley. Des milliers de statuettes en terre cuite représentants des corps humains y couvrent les sols.

Brand Spirit

Brand Spirit is a singular project developed by Andrew Miller, with which he describes:

Every day for 100 days, I will paint one branded object white, removing all visual branding, reducing the object to its purest form. I can purchase each object for less than $10, it can be something I own, something another person gives me, or something I find.

It is really rather surprising how many brands are so easily recognizable by its products (Coca-Cola) and how they become aspects of our daily lives (American Express), or in the symbol of a generation (Nintendo), or a profession (Moleskine).

118 Wally Power

The construction of the 118 Wally Power was completed ten years ago and its design still appears futuristic. It was designed by Luca Bassani and with its external lines he achieved an optical effect whereby judging the proportions of the yacht is quite challenging.

The final aerodynamic design was finished in the Manarello’s wind tunnel, where Ferrari develops its Formula One cars, resulting in a narrow, angular and aggressive appearance with air intakes resembling the fighter jets.

In the cover it has a superstructure of glass and carbon fiber, making it impossible to see the interior, where there is three rooms in a loft-like space: the control panel, the dining room and the living room. Furthermore, it has three cabins for passengers, three more for the crew, bathrooms and the kitchen, all of which are designed in a great minimalist style.

The most I value in this design is that in spite of the years gone by, 118 Wally Power is absolutely contemporary and innovative.
